Tool for species diversity decisions in forestry

4th, April 2013

Selecting and diversifying tree species and use of the correct genetic material is a key action to adapt to climate change. The negative impact of pests and diseases on our existing tree species makes it even more urgent.

To help with decisions on species diversity the Forestry Commission has developed a support tool called Ecological Site Classification (ESC) 3. This uses meteorological data and soils data to to help choose between 57 tree species. These decisions can then be tested against climate change scenarios for 2050 and 2080.
