Work complete on Netherton Burn runoff management project

Work are now complete on phase 2 of the Netherton Burn project at Elilaw Farm.

This project has been developed in close partnership with the landowner, Northumberland Community Flood Partnership, Catchment Sensitive Farming, the Univerisity of Newcastle Upon Tyne (PROACTIVE team, part of the School of Civil Engineering and Geosciences), Natural England.

Phase one of work included the creation of a farm pond with additional flood storage capacity, bunds to enhance floodplain storage and a ditch bund to divert high flows. This work was undertaken between January and April 2012.
The work was completed by local contractor WA Graham and Co.

Phase two of work has comprised the creation of a swale feature to divert high flows from the Netherton Burn towards the features created during phase 1, maximising the natural flood management approach of intercept - slow - store - filter. Work was completed at the end of last week, in spite of difficult weather and ground conditions.
The work has been completed by environmental contractors WL Straughan & Son Ltd.
